Discounted FOYAG Talk - 15th June

The Friends of York Art Gallery (FOYAG) are hosting a talk by Julian Stair, on 15th June 2013, at 2pm. It will take place at the Yorkshire Museum and will be on the intriguing topic of “The Matter of Life and Death”.

FOYAG are offering SAASY students a discounted entry price of just £3 (rather than the usual £7) which includes a free glass of wine!

This is a great opportunity and we hope to see you there!

FOYAG Exhibition and Art Sale - 18th-19th May 2013

The Friends of York Art Gallery (FOYAG) are running a gallery exhibition and a sale of work by local artists of the York area. It will take place on 18th and 19th May 2013, from 10am-4pm, at St. Olave’s Church Hall, Marygate Lane, York.

Admission is just £1 and all proceeds go towards the new art store at York Art Gallery. Refreshments will be available, so even if you don’t intend to buy, please do come along and browse some local artists’ works!

York Contemporary Art Walk - Today!

For those in York over the Easter holiday, York Art Gallery is pleased to announce details of the April York Contemporary Art Walk. 

These walking tours led by a York Art Gallery curator offer a unique chance to visit the pick of contemporary art exhibitions in galleries across York. At each stop, the curator, artist or exhibition organiser will give a short talk and there will be opportunity to chat and have a quick look at the exhibitions before we move on. It is a chance to learn a bit more about the art projects in the city and to see something new. Our aim is to whet the appetite and encourage everyone to return and enjoy the exhibitions in their own time. The event is free and there’s no need to book. 

The Walk will take place TODAY, Wednesday 10th April 2013 and will be led by Jenny Alexander, Assistant Curator of Fine Art. (Timings are approximate).

York Art Gallery On Tour 2013 - Lunchtime Talks

These talks are free to attend and are open to any and all members of the public! Come along, further your appreciation of contemporary art and enhance your Aesthetica Art Prize experience.

12.30pm – 1.00pm at York St Mary’s Church (Castlegate, York)

20th MarchThe winner of last year’s Aesthetica Art Prize, Julia Vogl, discusses her practice and the importance of art prizes for emerging artists.

27th MarchLaura Turner, York Art Gallery Curator, and Cherie Federico, Editor of Aesthetica Magazine, address the selection process, curating the show, and the shortlisted artists’ works.

3rd AprilA chance to find out more about performance art in practice with Dr Claire Hind from York St John University.

17th April A conversation with Frances Guy, Head of Collection and Exhibitions at The Hepworth Wakefield and Aesthetica Art Prize judge.

24th AprilArtist Mary Humphrey talks about her fascinating change of career to photography and her series, Roma : Transylvania : January 2011, which is on display in the show.
