York Carnival Cubes Art

With the intention of getting lost in the midst of astronauts and Caledonian dancers in York’s Carnival parade I was completely caught off guard by four white cubes in St. Helen’s Square today. The cubes, measuring about three metres, were part of Review the Cube’s latest project curated by Charlie Barnes, Susanne Davies and Clare Nattress, aptly entitled Art³. Their aim to ‘embrace new ideas in art’ shone through in the uniqueness of this exhibition and its unusual exhibiting space, which brought art into the open and to an audience, some members of which may not always be inclined to venture into realms of  modern art. It was exciting to see art of this genre intruding into this everyday space as though the old adage of bringing art to the masses was trying to be achieved.
